Friday Shootout - Streets and Pathways

This one just got me singing from start to finish!  In fact when I sat down to put it together, I started singing outloud the song I always sing at the beginning of any vacation road trip.  Me and Willie Nelson!

"On the road again...I just can't wait to get on the road again.
The life I love is making music with my friends
and I can't wait to get on the road again."

Usually when I break into the second chorus my wife gives me the look.

BUTLER: "You mean this one!"   He glares.  But it doesn't slow me down.

"Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, I'm such a fine sight to see,
It's a girl, my lord, in a flat bed Ford, slowing down to take a look at me.
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy."

BUTLER:  "Too late.  And that's your daughter, dummy, not just a girl.

BAGMAN: "And it's not a's a Harley.  But it's big as a Ford."

So now I'm trying to remember the theme from "Route 66"  -  Buzz Murdock and Todd Styles in their
classic Corvette -- well, it wasn't classic then.  Back then it was the newest model.

BUTLER:  "Back then, so were you."

So many mailboxes, so few houses...
At least no traffic jams.

May I spoke too soon!  Come on!  Move it!  Honk!
Who's holding up the line?

Is it these guys?
Ring Ring.
"Excuse me, but could you move over so I can pass?"
No...the line is being held up by this guy!
Hmmm...which path should I take?

Maybe I should ask directions from a cop?
(I like this because in 1968 there was no photoshop and we had to
actually take double-exposures in the camera.
Anybody remember film?)
And there are even roads for airplanes!

Okay, everybody now!  Outloud.  Sing it like you mean it!

mm.  Bagman and Butler just left, holding their hands to their ears and slamming the door.

And roads for boats!

And road for ghosts...

Philadelphia Alley in Charleston
where spirits from sailers who dueled and faught here
in the 1700's reach out and touch anyone crazy enough
to walk its length at night.

And there are roads for wagon trains...

These guys claim to be the worlds oldest, continuous wagon train,
traveling to different cities in the U.S. (so why do they say "world's" oldest?)

And there are roads for regular (non-wagon) trains...

I thought I was free of them but Bagman and Butler suddenly burst back in...

BAGMAN: "Roads for trains?!!!"

BUTLER:  "Excuse me, but you should not post such an underexposed picture."

I ignore them, remembering this place.  1986.   It is where I first met my wife.  I feel a future blog coming on.  It will probably have more underexposded pictures.

And there are roads for picking strawberries
Don't eat them all before we get back, Honey.

And roads for just having fun...

Unable to contain myself, once again I break into song.  Once again Bagman and Butler leave in disgust.  But some of you may know this last join right in and sing it with me!

Well my rig's a little old,
But that don't mean she's slow.
There's a flame from her stack,
And the smoke's rolling black as coal.
My hometown's coming in sight,
If you think I'm happy your right.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight.

The End

  1. Damn, You've reminded me that I forgot to post my last photo! Get back to you later.

  2. Fun one, Mark! There's nothing like a long summer road trip, singing loud to the radio. Looove that song by the Eagles! so much so I don't need the radio.

  3. you have out done even yourself. great post. Unlike NanU - when I sing while driving I have to have the radio blaring so that no one can hear me... all my musical talent being in my dancing feet.
I love the road with the mailboxes... proof that people live on that road.
    and of course the turtles....
    hugs from RIO

  4. Oh my gush I don't know where to begin...okey first off I think you should begin a meme that is for photos that is underexposed. Yes I remember film camera but don't have a camera before ^_^ can't afford to buy films more so pay for the developing. Second, it's okey if you carried away with your post I so love it, it's fun and makes me smile. Third, bravo you nailed it! ^_^ Happy Friday!

    Roads & Pathways

  5. You sure found a lot of ways to represent this theme; I love it that you found a caterpillar and a highway of turtles! The double-exposed officers look like they are giving very confusing directions. This was great fun.

  6. The post is delightful - images paired with lyrics. However, what I most enjoyed was your delight and enjoyment of the topic that was evident throughout!

"Excuse me would you move over so I can pass..."!! (Smiles)

  7. Bravo, bravo. Loved that. You are so creative. I do love to do my post with a story and photos. You are exceptionally good at doing that. B&B just know how to push your buttons. LOL. Love it.

  8. I always enjoy your posts. Great photos. My favorite was the turtles.

  9. Fantastic post! I was singing along and laughing the whole way. Loved the pictures almost as much as the commentary. I did a painting of some turtles like that. It's called "Follow Me" and the leader is a woodpecker that I added for color and humor. Enjoyed this so much. It is good to have time to read blogs again.

  10. great images! love the turtles

  11. You have one heck of a library of photos and they must be pretty well organized for you to come up with all of these! I was waiting for the ballad of Easy Rider to be mentioned. (By the way...that one comment from me that made you wince most certainly needed a winky icon at the end...must remember you cannot see my face!)

  12. Adorable as usual. I know all those songs too. How the heck did you get that shot of the turtles lined up? Now, unfortunately, "on the road again" is going to be stuck in my head until I go mad.

  13. I am always ready for the road. I like the caterpillar but the mailboxes win the prize.

    Missing you, my friend.

  14. It is so nice to find you again through another blog...these songs are all of my (and my hubby's) favorites. He actually got to visit Winslow AZ this Spring and drove Route 66. He and my brother took their BUCKET trip! Love your road photos and the turtles crack me up. Enjoy the weekend.

  15. In my dream, I dreamed I was riding that harley. yes, I was the driver, not the passenger. VROOOOM!

  16. Hi Mark,

The link in the last post was pasted by mistake, though you may like to see the it.

This is what I wanted to tell you when I saw your rows of letter box.

In Borneo, we had daily bread delivered to our house. Sometimes the bread delivery boy just threw our loaf of bread to the balcony. Some times, the bread will be squashed, some times eaten by the dog.

When I went to Canada, together with other Borneo friends, sometimes we rented a car, and drove out of Windsor.

A friend said, " what a good idea, with these bread boxes, the bread would be nice."

Of course these boxes were mail boxes.

On the same line, I saw the Vacancies and No vacancies signs at the motels. I tell my friends, let us go in a ask for jobs,

LOL , country bumpkins visiting the big city.

  17. As always a very entertaining post! Ooo, I love those strawberry picking 'roads', I think they are probably my favorite. Thanks for the smiles.

  18. Your creative juices were really flowing with this topic, weren't they? Love the regimented mailboxes!
    Terrific shoot out!
And now all I can hear is "Hit the Road, Jack."

  19. I love that shot of the mailboxes, so intriguing! people have to drive a distance away just to check their mails?

  20. I loved each and every pathway.. Great Post!

  21. you hit every possible road and pathway I think!! loved everyone of them. maybe the turtles or mailboxes are my favs. love the songs also. memories....

  22. Great pictures. Now, if they'd just make a canal with strawberries along the side, I might just be in heaven... :D

  23. Another amazing post! I do enjoy seeing the world thru your eyes!

  24. amazing shots! i love them. and great captions too. i'm enjoying them. ",)
