MONDAY POETRY JAM

Jessica chose the theme for today's jam...and I learned about it on Saturday night before going to bed.  The next thing I knew I was lying in bed wide awake and ironically trying to write a poem about insomnia.  So here it is.  Maybe I can sleep now.

INSOMNIA
I sleep like a dog
which is to say
I wake up wagging
if anyone enters the room
or there is the chance
of a treat or a walk
or a rub of the belly.

But the moment I'm left alone
I turn around, curl up
and instantly fall asleep
with my left foot quivering.

So why am I now
alone in the empty house
staring at the ceiling fan?

And why are you here in my mind
making me want to chase my tail
even when you're miles away?

  1. Ha..ha... nice share. I like it!

    Love the last lines:

And why are you here in my mind
making me want to chase my tail
    even when you're miles away?

    Happy sleepy sunday ~

  2. Great poem, you dog! Starts out cute but ends on a sort of sad note, of longing. Nicely done.

  3. Interesting choice of images. The ceiling fan is good, it's very real and 'solid' sort of. It sparks off many other images of that empty house at night, of dust and silent rooms, and tossing and turning.

Well put together, I think. Incites rereading.

  4. Nice - I really like the dog image a lot. I had trouble sleeping last night too, but that could have been the Diet Sun Drop I drank at 5:00.

  6. A gem of a poem pulled out of your hat, so sleeplessness paid off, Mr. Butler Bagman. I do like the opening very much. Came at me like a friendly retriever.

  13. Nice one, Mark. I like how it starts off in one direction and then goes somewhere different.
    Is there howling involved?

And what are you cooking up for us for next week?
