A thought just struck me

as Karen was providing wisdom to Connner.

"The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence," she said.

"Ba ya ya ba ya ya YA BA YA!"  he replied.

The context of this conversation was Conner's game of climbing up on her and then immediately wanting to climb down and then climb up again.  I had just made the comment, "A door is something a dog is always on the wrong side of."

To which Conner replied, "Ba ya ya ba ya ya YA BA YA!"

And Karen had translated into the traditional wisdom that "The grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence."

Which is when a deep philosophical concept struck me that may have meaning on many levels -- ranching, marriage, international relations...  "If the grass really isn't greener on the other side of the fence...then why do you need a fence in the first place?"

  2. That has profound implications Mark. This might just revolutionize society. If there were no fences to protect us from our neighbors, then we might actually get to know our neighbors.

    What would happen then?

  4. Maybe you will find out what fences are really for on FSO this week. The theme is fences!!!
Surely there will be some philosophical idea and concepts amongst that.

  5. A world with no fences would be an interesting concept. Very unique way to look at things.

  7. No Fences = no way to nude sunbathe without your nosy neighbor checking you out. Of course, that may not be a bad thing at all, but less creepy with a fence ;-)

  8. Oh, good point. I hate fences breaking up the landscape and making it feel so claustrophobic. But...if you had a really bothersome neighbor...maybe you would want a fence. We had a neighbor that used to sneak into our garden and um, shall we say taste its produce. We would watch her from the kitchen table eating berries from the vine or sampling some tomatoes and basil. We had enough to share so no big deal...so my husband started taking her garden produce too. She has since passed away and we are glad to have shared and not to have bothered with the fence.

  10. See, now you've stumped me. That's an excellent question, and if I don't come up with an answer, I won't sleep and then it's all downhill for me.

Damn you, Bagman! Or was that Butler?
