Sand Sculpture - a day at the beach

Yesterday, in and around Charleston, the annual Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto arts festival began. You can pay big bucks and go see opera or you can pay nothing and go see the sand sculpture competition on the Isle of Palms beach about ten minutes from my house. There was also some water -- it's a beach, after all -- for next Friday's shootout, but today is for sand and some talented sand manipulators.

Butler's Favorite is below:
(Incredible detail -- if you click on it you can even see bricks showing through
the broken plaster on the side)

BAGMAN'S FAVORITE is below:
(He had to draw an arrow pointing to the sculpture -- he was very upset because some people walked in front of the lens just as he was taking the picture.)

It was hard to pick but my MY Favorite, I think, is below:
(Mainly because it was different from the alligator, dragon, and pirate theme
and because I was hoping when the tide finally came in and destroyed all the others, this one would just float away and turn up on some beach in Australia or Maryland.

  2. Mark, I've always always loved sand sculpture so I was so pleased to enjoy your photos ...

And it was my pleasure to give you a hint yesterday, it's what we do ...for each other, being brother and sister or pilgrims on the same journey.

Tell Bagman to watch those girls in bikinis!

    xx

  5. I like sand sculptures and I haven't seen any festival like this. It's so funny that you took a picture of the sand sculpture behind those 5 women??? hahaha, I doubt it. I like the dragon one. I enjoyed this post, thanks for sharing.

  9. What a bummer the bikini girls ruined your photo. What was the sculpture of again?

  10. I love the classical building sculpture -- and also the ankles and feet in sandals. It really speaks to the warmth of the day on a sandy beach.

  11. I'm indecisive today. I loved them all. I thought it was interesting about the bikini babes - they were all in black. Black must be the new sandbabe color. Bagman is a tricky one. Butler, now he has discerning tastes. You? Maryland?

  12. I think my favorite is the skeleton, though I see the draw of your three favorites, especially Bagman's ;-)

  13. That dragon is awesome!!
I know you must have been furious when those five ugly gals walked into your shot. I hate it when that happens!! What a drag for you dude, lol.
So....Bagman is trying to get shots of you showering for Friday huh? That gives me an idea........a terrible, awful, yet wonderful
    idea.
This post makes me want to go to the beach!!
Hope your holiday is filled with love, joy and laughter and..........

  17. Patty and Dorothea reporting in after a hard day. All of you did a great job taking photos. Bagman did what Bagman does best.

My favorite, as far as visual goes, is the old man and the skeleton. But the thought of the boat rising up and heading out to paradise, with me aboard, trumps the others. Oh, you can come, too.

    Have a great Memorial day.

  18. Love it! reminds me of Sandy-eggo and my dad always taking a serious, working-man's, shovel to the beach for us instead of teeny plastic toy ones, and of course the sand sculpture festival before it got way too serious.
Now, don't get sand on your tongue from your gob hanging open when the chicks stroll by!

  19. Love them all because they all represent a talent I surely will never have! What fun! Not surprised with Bagman's choice, soooo glad you have better taste, at least when it comes to sand sculpture, so I won't ask what you thought of the swim suits.

  20. Actually I tended to like Bagman's favorite, but all the photos were fun. The skeleton and the dragon were excellent.

I wish they'd do something like this at our local beach.

  21. I'd like to think that my kids can remember their mum on any beach, completely oblivious to the passerby who stopped to watch as I dug and patted, scraped and cajoled the sand into mermaids and snakes, tables of food, wedding cakes or fallen palm trees, and hopefully they can remember without embarassment. Lovely post and thanks to David at authorblog for finding you.

  24. Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She
placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit
crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost.
..HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say,
and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
